Over the millennia, the world's own atavistic Sacred Well has been known by many names --- a fount, a spring, a pool, and an underground stream, just to mention a few. The list is endless. But whatever it has been called, it has often been perceived as the original source of all knowledge here on earth.
Why? Because when we examine the cosmogonies, myths, legends, fables, faery tales, folklore, and so forth of the world, we find the exact same themes time and again. Mythologists term these archetypes "motifs," while the psychologist Carl Jung hypothesized that they are part of a collective unconscious that has always been present everywhere and that is inherited.
Jung stated that "in the psychology of primitives, [these archetypes] correspond to [philosopher, psychologist, and ethnologist Lucien] Lévy-Bruhl's concept of 'representations collectives,' and in the field of comparative religion, they have been defined by [Durkheimian scholars Henri] Hubert and [Marcel] Mauss as 'categories of the imagination.' [Anthropologist and ethnologist] Adolf Bastian long ago called them 'elementary' or 'primordial thoughts.'" --- Collected Works, Volume 9
It is not the purpose of Ravenscroft Castle's own small Sacred Well to debate whence these archetypes and other material contained herein originated, however, but, rather, simply to make some of this information available for perusal and contemplation by the interested reader, once the buildings and sites that comprise the Sacred Well are opened to the public.
THE SACRED WELL IS CURRENTLY CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC.
